Set up a build channel


A build channel is a feature used to organize different version of game builds under a similar platform. For instance, you might create a Playtest-Windows build channel to distribute builds for the playtest game for the Windows platform. Administrators can create more than one build channel depending on the requirements.

Users who subscribe to a build channel will be able to see and download any build that are distributed under that channel.


Create a build channel

  1. Login to BlackBox.

  2. Click the Build Channel menu to access the Build Channel page.

  3. Click Add New Build Channel on the right hand side.

  4. In the pop-up panel, fill in properties for your channel as follows:

    • Build channel name - the name for your build channel.

    • Platform - Windows, PS5, Xbox etc. It’s imlportant this matches the build target set in Unreal.

    • Changelist - You have a selection of previously uploaded changelists here.

    • Head of Build - You can select any previously uploaded build to be Head-ID. This means that you can choose an earlier build. if needed.

  5. After all fields are complete, click the Add button.

Your build will be created and the message New Build Channel Created displayed at the top of the Build Channel page.

Subscribe to a build channel

Once a build channel has been created, you need to subscribe to it using the Subscribed Build Channel(s) panel in the Overview page.

  1. Click the + above Subscribe Build Channels.
    The list of available channels displays.

  2. Tick next to the channel you want to subscribe to.

  3. Click Save Changes.

Details of the channels you have now subscribed to are displayed on the Overview screen. In the example, we have subscribed to one channel. Information about the channel is displayed, including the latest build, its platform and release notes, and other information aimed more towards Build Engineers.

Configure the build channel

After a build channel has been created, you can set up its configuration based on your requirements. For instance who should be able to see the channel, and which build is used as the Head of Build for this channel.

Set the privacy level of a build channel

Build channel privacy is used to determine the accessibility of a build channel itself. There are two different privacy levels; Public and Private.

  • A Public build channel will be available for all type of user (except Guest) in the Subscription list.

  • A Private build channel will only be available for a specific list of users and will be hidden from the Subscription list for others.

To set build channel privacy :

  1. Go to Build Channel page.

  2. Click Public/Private in the Groups column.

  3. Select the privacy type as either Public or Private.

  4. Click Save Changes.

Set the build channel’s head history

The build channel’s Head is used to set a specific version of a build as the newest in a channel. You can see the history of a version that has been set as build channel’s head and revert it back to a previous version as necessary.

  1. Click the arrow button beside build channel name.

  2. Hover and click Set as head for any available build version if you want to revert the channel’s head to the previous version.
